The Brewers Guild launched a campaign on behalf of industry seeking excise relief for stale or spoilt beer.
The Brewing industry in New Zealand has been fortunate in that we have had the privilege of being able to operate throughout COVID-19 as an essential service. Not all industries have been as fortunate. However, the issue of excise tax payable on product that will likely be destroyed remained a significant one.
In late April 2020, the Brewers Guild made a submission on behalf of the brewing industry to the Chief Customs Officer regarding the extend of the issue facing the industry.
The relief we were seeking is relief on excise for all product that left a customs controlled area in February and March and no increase to excise on 1 July.
We encouraged our members and all brewers to share their stories with government around the impact of exicse on their particular business.
