Brewers Guild of New Zealand announces steward to judge programme
The Brewers Guild of New Zealand is excited to announce our steward to judge programme.
The New Zealand Beer Awards has always been supported by dedicated volunteers. This year we have decided to formalise the arrangements that have been in place to provide a clear pathway to judging and ensure that we are maintaining the highest standards for judges.
The programme will typically involve two years as a Steward, followed by two years as a Trainee Judge. After four years the individual will be eligible for selection as a Judge for the New Zealand Beer Awards. Progression to each stage will be assessed and those deemed to have successfully carried out their two year blocks will move on.
Stewarding experience or experience as a Trainee/Associate Judge in other jurisdictions will be considered as contributing to requirements on a case by case basis.
The programme will be available to anyone working directly in brewing in New Zealand – a strong preference will be given to brewers or people on the pathway to becoming brewers.
Brewers Guild stewards are essential to the integrity of the New Zealand Beer Awards and are responsible for ensuring the judging process is professional and seamless, with a focus on pouring and delivering exhibits to the judging table.
Stewards’ duties typically include:
- Setting up glassware for judging
- Pouring beers for judging
- Tapping kegs
- Stock control
- Removing glassware, washing glasses and keeping judging tables in a clean state
- Making sure that the event’s back of house is in order
Through the role of steward, participants gain an invaluable insight to the process for managing and judging a large and complex Beer Awards event.
We are seeking both Stewards and Trainees for this year
